The Best Seat in the House

The kitchen island is where a home actually happens. Coffee before work, homework after school, a glass of wine while someone else cooks. So the stools around it matter more than almost any other chair in the house. They get used every day, they’re seen from every angle, and they have to look as good empty as they feel when you sit in them.

For a recent client project here in Cincinnati, we chose three Dalia stools by Midj, the Italian furniture maker we’ve carried for years.

Why Dalia works

The Dalia SG TS, designed by Beatriz Sempere for Midj, is a study in restraint. It has a softly sculpted, fully upholstered shell that wraps the sitter, a slim column and a wide disc base, here in Midj’s Sand finish, that stays planted on hardwood. Every detail earns its place:

  • It adjusts. A gas lift takes the seat from about 25¼” to 31″, so one stool works at counter or bar height and adapts to whoever sits down.
  • It swivels. You can turn to the conversation, to the stove or to the view without scraping the floor.
  • It supports you. The low, curved back gives real support without blocking sightlines across an open plan.
  • It’s built for everyday life. A T-shaped footrest, a sturdy metal base and upholstery in fabric, leather or faux leather, made in Italy.

Color as architecture

In this kitchen, the stools are the color story. Orange upholstery with matching stitching, set against grey Shaker cabinets and white quartz, picks up the pop art on the wall, the citrus in the fruit bowl and the warm tones of the oak floor. Dalia comes in a wide range of fabrics and leathers, so the stool can be the quiet neutral in a room or, as here, the accent everything else answers to.

The toughest critic in the house

Every project has a final reviewer. In this home, it’s Frieda.

Frieda, the resident long-haired dachshund, took one look at the new stools and claimed the one at the end of the island. We’ll take that as a five-star review.

Take one home today

Most Midj pieces are made to order in Italy, so you can choose the exact fabric, leather and finish for your space. Right now, we have Midj stools on the showroom floor, ready to go home with you today: two pairs of Toy stools, Dalia’s sibling from Midj. One pair is pastel green faux leather on the same Sand base you see here; the other pair is red on a Cherry Red frame.

Toy takes a different approach from Dalia: a square cushioned seat and a separate padded back, set on a slim gas-lift column with the same T footrest and disc base. Both are upholstered in Midj’s fire-retardant Secret faux leather with matching stitching.

Come sit in them, see our Midj swatches and catalogs, and let us help you plan the seating around your island.
